Description of VTT

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is the biggest contract research organisation in Northern Europe. VTT provides high-end technology solutions and innovation services.

Biotechnical and chemical processes are one of the seven technological focus areas at VTT. VTT has comprehensive expertise in biotechnological research and applications, food technology, pharmaceutical development and diagnostics as well as in natural polymer chemistry and applications. In biotechnology the focus of our activity is on enzyme technology and its applications as well as in the more effective use of renewable resources for the production of industrial chemicals and materials. In polymer chemistry main target is the tailoring of natural polymers to industrial process needs.

In biotechnology, our core competences include enzyme discovery, characterization and improvement of enzymes, as well as understanding and exploiting enzymatic reactions in polymeric and fibrous matrices. Furthermore, we have know-how on the target processes, e.g. pulp and paper manufacture, textile processing and food processes. Competences in natural polymer chemistry are in starch, cellulose, and hemicellulose modifications to coatings, adhesives, pigments, and paper applications as well as in up-scaling of modifications processes. Our profound understanding of the chemistry and macromolecular properties of the raw materials combined with enzymatic and chemical tools is applied to develop sustainable process stages and intelligent products.

Description of the polysaccharide research activities

  • Screening, characterization, engineering and production of novel enzymes: lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose and chitin modifying enzymes
  • Enzymatic reaction mechanisms on polymeric substrates
  • Modification of cellulosic and lignocellulosic fibres and lignocellulose-derived polymers with enzymatic, chemical and chemo-enzymatic methods
  • Up-scaling of modification processes

  • Fermenter capacity (10 - 1200 l)
  • HPLC, LC-MS for poly- and oligosaccharide analysis
  • Protein chromatography equipment
  • HTS (high-throughput screening) robot for enzyme discovery and engineering
