Description of the Petru Poni Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry
The Petru Poni Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry is an institute of excellence of the Romanian Academy and concentrates on basic and applied research in polymer chemistry and physics. The research topics are directed towards multifunctional polymeric materials (smart polymers, photoactive polymers, thin films, micro/nanoparticles); supramolecular chemistry (rotaxanes, self assembling systems); bioactive/biocompatible polymers based on natural and synthetic polymers (controlled drug release, tissue engineering); management of polymer wastes; polymers for environment protection (degraded soil regeneration, water purification). The Institute employs 284 people including about 110 researchers and 55 PhD students. The main expertise of the research staff is on organic and polymer chemistry (synthesis by conventional and unconventional methods, structural characterisation), polymer physics (solution and solid state thermal, rheological, mechanical, electrical, optical, surface properties), polymeric materials (alloys, composites, hybrids, thin films, multilayer films, micro and nanoparticles), bioactive and biocompatible polymers and supramolecular chemistry.
Description of the polysaccharide research activities:
Chemical modification of polysaccharides: monosaccharides, oligo- and polysaccharides derivatization (polysaccharides with ionic groups, polysaccharide esters, hydrophobically modified polysaccharides); saccharide copolymers; polysaccharide networks and interpenetrating networks Polysaccharide containing blends and composites: blends of polysaccharides with lignin and synthetic polymers; wood waste synthetic polymers composites Interaction of polysaccharides in solution and in solid state: cyclic oligosaccharide complexes; cellulose and hemicellulose synthetic polymers interactions Polysaccharides in medical/pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications: intelligent drug delivery systems; polysaccharides proteins interactions; separation membranes; supports for cell culture; bile acid sequestrants, cholesterol solubilisers; thickeners, rheo-fluidifiants Wood technology: pulp bleaching and biobleaching, biosynthesis and biodegradation of wood components, package and board manufacture
